Osteopathic Manual Medicine in the San Diego Area

Holistic

Practice

Philosophy

I use my hands to perform manual, hands-on medicine to address underlying causes of disease.

Osteopathic physicians, like MDs, complete the same rigorous medical training, pass multiple board exams and go through multi-year residency programs before being fully licensed to practice. Unlike MDs, we study manual, hands-on medicine. A select number of DOs like myself continue to study and advance those skills beyond school and residency, specializing full time in osteopathic manual medicine.

As physical limitations improve, patients often undergo positive shifts in their emotional and spiritual health. Osteopathy assesses and treats the physical body but also considers the emotional and spiritual state of the patient as equally important parts in the healing journey.

The goal of any medical treatment is to offer your body resources, whether that be manipulation with my hands, a prescription drug, or surgery. The resources I offer work with, and bolster, the natural forces within your own body to find health. Unlike drugs and surgeries, I take pride in treating causes versus simply masking and managing your symptoms. Many patients experience change after the first appointment while others, especially those with chronic long term issues, may require multiple visits.

If you are looking for a physician to partner with who will look at the whole picture and use your body's own resources to help you heal, I invite you to schedule an appointment.

PHILOSOPHY

To find health should be the object of the doctor.
Anyone can find disease.

— Andrew Taylor Still, Founder of Osteopathy (learn more here)

WHAT CAN I TREAT?

I treat all ages – newborns to people in their 90s.

The most common things I treat are:

  • Pain: acute and chronic

  • Back, neck, and joint pain: orthopedic issues

  • Pediatric: constipation, misshapen head, poor feeding, fussy infants, allergies and infections

  • Sports injuries and trauma

  • Rheumatological conditions

  • Headaches, concussion, and other neurological issues

"We osteopaths are still the best-kept secret in American medicine..."

—Ken Lossing, D.O.

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

Osteopathy works by finding and working with the health in each patient no matter how serious their illness. If there is life, somewhere in the system there is health. The three core principles of osteopathy are:

  1. The body's natural desire is to go towards health, to self heal, and to self regulate if given adequate resources.

  2. The body's structure and its function are interrelated.

  3. Health consists of not only the physical body but the emotional and spiritual health of the individual.

My Uncle Ted was fortunate to be referred to Walter Cohen, DO, following a stroke in Feb. of this year.  Prior to his stroke he suffered for several years from spinal stenosis, an extremely painful condition. Dr. Cohen has a positive, calm presence that exudes caring and trust. I would highly recommend his treatments.  —Penny B.
